By placing works along the walls and free standing in the space, the viewer has to reorient their body while viewing the works. Alongside this reorientation, I unground and reground space through abstract and concrete monochromatic imagery used in the photographs and sculptures. This monochromatic color palette points towards the insidious nature of this history, and it’s often invisible or hidden environmental harm. The work references three key sites: Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan, New York; 525 West 20th Street in Chelsea, New York and The Hanford Site in Benton County, Washington. Upon entering the show, the viewer encounters their reflection on the back of a polished steel sculpture, entitled&nbsp; Old Albany Post Road, Phillipstown, New York, freestanding in the space. It’s screenprinted image shows a panoramic stitching together of three images of a siren site in the Emergency Planning Zone of Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. The other metal curved and corrugated sculptures reference industrial forms like storage drums, safety cones and fences found on these sites. While the screenprinted images on the sculptures combine original photographs of the sites' landscapes, infrastructure and workers with archival images of the sites' past floorplans and residents. The eight photographs pinned along a room length metal bar suggest the possibility of a rearrangement and revision of our understanding of our environment’s nuclear war and energy production history. A key photograph hung in installation, Siren’s Shadow, depicts an emergency siren at Indian Point flattened into a symbol, suggesting this site’s past and possible future of environmental harm. I confuse space by photographing downward at the shadow of a siren thirty feet above the ground. This confusion of space is my method of reorientation for questioning our environment’s histories. How does the expressed neutrality of institutions hide harm? How and who do we hold responsible for these harms now and in the future? How can we care for our environment and it’s histories going forward? ongoing photography and sculpture series reconsiders the Hudson River and its surrounding landscape as it empties into the bay bordering South Brooklyn by examining how human attempts to control the environment are embedded within built infrastructure. Through archival research and on-site investigation, I surface overlooked histories and material relationships that shape the river’s past and present. Black-and-white photographs made at the northern reaches of the Hudson River in the Adirondacks focus on its connection to a mid-nineteenth-century iron ore blast furnace. These images trace the furnace’s reliance on the river for energy and the surrounding forest for raw materials, revealing an early network of extraction that continues to inform the landscape today. While photographs made at the southern end of the river of the active construction of flood barriers focus on an attempt to disconnect and protect against the river’s rising levels due to climate change. Alongside these photographs, I create composite sculptures inspired by industrial objects found along the river—utility access panels, bulkheads, flood barriers, and corrugated fencing. Their metal materiality echoes the region’s history of iron production and the broader industrial use of New York’s waterways. Constructed from metal, sandbags, and driftwood that are bent, pressed, and formed, these works incorporate image transfers of archival materials and my own photographs through screenprinting and paperlithography. Found images include scientific studies and measurement of sturgeon fish (native to New York) and photographs of everyday people touching black ash tree trunks that are facing major population decline. Sculptures of bulkhead barrier forms with images sourced from the Vermont Black Ash Inventory on iNaturalist highlight how important they are for flooding mitigation, even as they are threatened by the emerald ash borer. While original photographs of the Hudson River and it’s tributaries are abstracted or washed away on other panels. Their surfaces are further marked etched maps that merge visual languages—from subway maps to historic iron ore excavation diagrams—suggesting overlapping systems of navigation, control, and movement. Central to my practice is an interest in the limits of environmental control: infrastructures that erode, barriers that fail, and systems that cannot fully contain natural forces. In contrast, I look to adaptive natural forms, such as ash trees that thrive in flood zones, as models of resilience. By drawing parallels between industrial structures and natural forms, my work explores the porous boundary between the built and the organic, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human and ecological It explores the legacy of nuclear production in New York and highlights its continued effect on our everyday surroundings. The short film, Four Minutes, Full Volume, depicts emergency siren tests within the evacuation zone of the recently decommissioned Indian Point Nuclear Energy Plant, fifty miles north of New York City on the Hudson River.&nbsp; The film intersperses five siren tests that each run for four minutes at a single unwavering tone at 580 Hz between ambient sound scenes of the zone. Through these meditative static scenes of the evacuation zone and the siren’s sound, the short film highlights the ambiguity of grappling with the ubiquitous nuclear infrastructure around us. The sculpture which opens the show has aluminum tuned chimes to 580 Hz, the same frequency as the sirens surrounding the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant and functions as a warning system. It questions the efficacy of government emergency planning through its indoor activation from fans on a controlled “natural wind” setting. The black and white photographs from within the zone, the short film and sculpture asks us to reconsider if we’re listening to these warnings in a time of increasingly unpredictable emergencies in New York and elsewhere.
